The Musings of May

A Message from Jim May

I am sitting in my office, enjoying the singing of the birds, the fan is going and the temperature is in the mid 70’s. School is out, Vacation Bible School is happening, our youth are enjoying vacation and employment, Jeannie and Bob Richardson are traveling (as it will be for so many of you). It’s summer and I hope these next few weeks you have are safe, happy and relaxing. That being said I will be traveling between June 30-July 5. I will fly out of National Airport at 6:30 in the morning on the 30th and will land in Haiti around 11:00 a.m.

I’ve never been to Haiti. I understand its going to be warmer than here. I know I will see poverty like I’ve never seen. Just the same, I am looking forward to seeing a beauty that is already there in the hearts of the people that have received your gifts.

Preparing for this trip started a few years ago. A priest, raised in Haiti, ordained from the Diocese of Massachusetts, Joseph Constant visited us and told how his mother being guided by God asked him to start an orphanage. Because he reached out to us and others—we responded. I became active with the fledgling program and the desire to go grew.

Many of you already know what has happened since. You know about the feeding program, the adoption of the orphans who could not go to school unless they had last names. You know that when it was time to go to school they needed uniforms. All these things they now have because we believed that God was calling us and other churches to supply them.

Through the efforts of this church: time talent and money—115 children a day are fed, clothed and receive medical attention. A car will be purchased soon to be used for emergencies such as getting to the hospital and transporting food. A house has been offered for sale so the project will receive the funds. (This could have been the orphanage, but was not in the right town.) Another house has been offered. It is for rent. It is in the right location and can provide shelter for 25 children. Pray that this can happen. At our last meeting one of the members of the board said “The more we move forward the more God blesses us.”

Somewhere around 11:00 a.m. on Monday I will step off the plane and be on Haitian soil. I will then witness first hand what this project has accomplished. From the beauty and serenity of my office I have witnessed the beauty and serenity that this church has given these children. On Monday I will meet them. Pray that we can continue to do God’s work for this and any other project God asks us to participate in. Pray that the next time I go some of you will find a way to come with me.
