Colonial Churches

In the years before the American Revolution, a substantial number of churches  were built in Virginia under the aegis of the Church of  England. Beginning in 1850, Bishop Meade began work on a two volume study of these churches and their people. Bishop Meade’s work was published  in two volumes under the title “Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia.” These volumes are available as free downloads from Google Books.  The volumes contain line drawings of many colonial churches. Material relevant to St. Paul’s is found in Volume II starting on page 187.

This website is collecting recent photos of interesting and attractive colonial churches.  Jeannie Richardson has started the collection by providing photos of St. Mary’s White Chapel in Lancaster County.  Additional churches will be included in this collection as photographs become available.
